New Projects

 

PEPNet Announces 2003 Awardees

PEPNet has awarded its 2003 awardees. The organizations honored submitted detailed applications for the rigorous PEPNet peer review process. They demonstrated effectiveness across their organizations, in the PEPNet categories of Purpose and Activities, Organization and Management, Youth Development, Workforce Development, and Evidence of Success. Twenty-seven were awarded this year, the most ever.


Legislative Announcements

 

A Review of the Reauthorization Process in Legislation

The House and Senate have both introduced their respective bills (H.R. 1350 and S. 1248) in regards to the IDEA reauthorization process. The full House has passed its bill. In the Senate, the bill has been passed out of Committee and is awaiting consideration by the full Senate. Once both the full House and Senate have passed their respective bills, a Conference Committee will be appointed to report a final version of the legislation. This final version then goes back to both the House and Senate for a final vote. This will then be the version of the legislation that, once passed, goes to the President for signature and becomes law.

On July 22, 2003, the Senate Republican Policy Committee (RPC) chaired by Senator Jon Kyl (R-AZ) released a paper entitled "Disabled Children May Be Left Behind if IDEA Law Becomes an Entitlement." This document outlines the RPC's stance on IDEA reauthorization, emphasizing how IDEA may be viewed within the context of the Bush administration's education agenda. Available in PDF (15 pages).

Take Part in Disability Mentoring Day, October 15, 2003

Disability Mentoring Day (DMD) will be commemorated on October 15, 2003, in conjunction with National Disability Employment Awareness Month. DMD is a large-scale broad-based effort to promote internships and employment opportunities, and career development for students and job seekers with disabilities. DMD seeks people who are interested in participating in their community as a Mentee, Workplace Mentor, Educator, or Service Provider, or people who are interested in playing a role in organizing DMD activities.

A Needs Assessment for Students Age 17-21 with Significant Disabilities  (2003)

On-Campus Outreach, an OSEP funded outreach project at the University of Maryland has created an online training module on Needs Assessment for Students with Significant Disabilities. This self-paced training module provides a needs assessment tool that can be used to evaluate the educational services received by students 17-21 with significant disabilities. The module includes step-by-step instructions, downloadable forms, and a downloadable PowerPoint presentation that can be used to train others.

 

CHORE: Home Management System  (2003)

Life Success for Children with Learning Disabilities: A Parent Guide  (2003)

This guide, from the National Center for Learning Disabilities, is based on over 20 years of research conducted by the Frostig Center in Pasadena, CA. More Than Just a Job: Person-Centered Career Planning  (October 2003)

A new brief from the Institute for Community Inclusion lays out the principles of listening to job seekers to help them shape and achieve their career goals. Person-Centered Career Planning focuses on identifying what the job seeker wants to do rather than skills and limitations he or she may have. This brief will help the reader view career planning as an ongoing process rather than a one-time event, develop a job seeker-focused, job seeker-directed orientation to career planning, and much more.

The document, prepared by Project FORUM, contains a discussion of several Specific Learning Disability (SLD) identification approaches and the way they have been used, current state practices in SLD identification, and alternative approaches that are being proposed by researchers and stakeholder organizations. The Care Notebook  (2003)

The Care Notebook and Care Organizer are tools for families who have children with special health care needs. Families use Care Notebooks to keep track of important information about their child's health and care, this makes it easier to find and share key information with their child's care team. It was created by The Center for Children with Special Needs.

This online user guide focuses on how to integrate self-directed transition planning into the general curriculum and within inclusive classrooms. “What’s Next” is intended to help special and general educators address standards in content areas, and link transition issues within their curriculum. The tool that was used to integrate into the general curriculum is the NEXT STEP curriculum teaching high school students how to begin planning for their lives after they leave school. S.T.E.P. is an acronym for "Student Transition and Educational Planning." What’s Next was developed by the Secondary Special Education and Transition Programs office in the College of Education, University of Oregon.

The National Science Foundation has issued a program solicitation for the 2004 Math and Science Partnership (MSP). The MSP program is a major research and development effort that supports innovative partnerships to improve K-12 student achievement in mathematics and science. MSP projects are expected to both raise the achievement levels of all students and significantly reduce achievement gaps in the mathematics and science performance of diverse student populations. Successful projects serve as models that can be widely replicated in educational practice to improve the mathematics and science achievement of all the Nation's students.
