2004 National Youth Leadership Conference: Learning, Living, Leading: Youth with Disabilities Continuing the Legacy

American Public Health Association Annual Meeting and Exposition: Putting the Public Back Into Public Health

This conference will offer a variety of sessions pertaining to health and disability. Scientific sessions will focus on community barriers, disability policy, health promotion and wellness, secondary conditions, disability classification, barriers to participation, and health and wellbeing for women with disabilities. Sessions will include updates on the NCPAD programs database, usage of fitness and recreation facilities, and a home physical activity program. Poster sessions will address barriers and facilitators to participation, health and disability, community-based solutions for promoting physical activity for people with disabilities, and perceptions of health and physical activity in adults with physical disabilities.

Bridging the Gap Between Research and Practice: A Conference for Teachers of Students with Learning Disabilities

This conference will provide in-depth instruction to teachers looking to implement new and proven methods in their classrooms. Participants sign up in advance for four, three-hour workshops. Topics will include: Early Identification and Prevention of Learning and Behavior Problems in Young Children, Teaching Students with Disabilities Mathematical Problem Solving, Conducting Interventions with Spanish Speaking Kindergartners, Assisting Older Struggling Readers to Decode Fluently and Accurately, and Improving Content Area Learning. Professional Development for Professionals in Transition or Postsecondary Settings

This course will train currently-employed professionals to develop, implement, and evaluate the impact of summer college-preparation programs for students with disabilities who have been accepted to postsecondary institutions but have not yet begun classes. The course will be delivered via the World Wide Web using WebCT and runs from September to December. Course work and participation will equate to the requirements of a three-credit graduate course. Supported by the Center on Education and Work at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
