In 2014 they will offer weekend camps throughout the year, as well as day programs and week-length camps and camping trips. Building Pathways to Postsecondary Education for Youth in the Foster Care System Web-based Event December 18, 2013 1:00 PM - 2:00 PM (Eastern) The American Youth Policy Forum (AYPF) will present a webinar on “Building Pathways to Postsecondary Education for Youth in the Foster Care System,” discussing the challenges of navigating postsecondary opportunities for older youth, ages 16-24, who are or have been involved in the foster care system. These youth are more likely to experience social-emotional challenges, physical health risks, and academic difficulties and need multiple supports that encourage success in all areas as they transition into adulthood. The webinar will highlight the report “Connected by 25.” AYPF is a nonprofit, nonpartisan professional development organization based in Washington, DC, providing learning opportunities for policymakers, practitioners, and researchers working on youth and education issues at the national, state, and local levels. Common Core State Standards and Transition Think Tank Web-based Event December 9, 2013 3:00 PM - 4:00 PM (Eastern) The National Secondary Transition Technical Assistance Center (NSTTAC) will host a webinar, “Common Core State Standards and Transition Think Tank,” on December 9, 2013 (rescheduled from December 2, 2013) on the possible connections between Common Core State Standards (CCSS) and transition-focused skill development (e.g., self-determination, student involvement in the IEP/ ILP, career awareness, social and communication skills) for unit and lesson planning and IEP goal development. The webinar will present examples and a process for planning that aligns standards and transition-focused content for all students at the secondary level. The session will show data systems that have been mapped in the Align tool and policy and research questions related to indicator 14 that are currently in the Connect tool. Understanding Accelerated Learning Across Secondary and Postsecondary Education Web-based Event November 25, 2013 1:00 PM - 2:30 PM (Eastern) “Understanding Accelerated Learning Across Secondary and Postsecondary Education,” a webinar sponsored by The American Youth Policy Forum (AYPF) and the College and Career Readiness and Success (CCRS) Center, will discuss the CCRS Center’s recent brief of the same title and will feature a description of the categories of accelerated learning developed in the brief and presentations from programs profiled. In striving to create an education system that is responsive to the needs of all, pathways must be fostered that afford students the opportunity to move through secondary and postsecondary education at an individualized pace that meets their academic needs. Accelerated learning is as a promising tool to provide such opportunities to students.
